The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has established a new unit within the Nigeria Police Force dedicated to the protection of high-profile individuals. Known as the Special Protection Unit (SPU), the initiative aims to address the growing demand for elite security services across the country.

CSP Hassan Sani, Commander of SPU Base 23 in Minna, Niger State, confirmed that the unit was created to enhance protective services for the nation’s elite. Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of the unit’s first batch of officers, he noted that 50 personnel had completed an intensive two-week training program. The curriculum covered VIP protection, convoy operations, firearms handling, martial arts, self-defense, first aid, and basic firefighting.

During the event, which was held at the premises of Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre in Minna, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the donation of 25 additional patrol vehicles to the Niger State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. The vehicles are intended to boost security operations, especially in major towns within the state.

Governor Bago also revealed plans to collaborate with the Police in building new barracks on the outskirts of Minna to strengthen security across the capital. He commended the IGP for establishing the SPU and pledged continued support for the police and other security agencies in combating insecurity in Niger State.

Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, conveyed these developments in an official statement released on Wednesday.
