Speaking at NSCEA Secretariat, while the video has attracted public outrage, Bishop Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies Secretary General,
Nigerian Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs (NSCEA) reacting to the speech says, “that security agencies should immediately arrest him and prosecute him immediately as a matter of urgency.”
“The hate speech is unacceptable and no apology is acceptable, he should be used as a deterrent and an example to all his likes” she added.
In a report published on February 22, 2024 by Vincent Osuwo, “A Muslim cleric has called for the killing of Remi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The cleric, in a sermon, noted that Mrs. Tinubu is an “infidel” who should be killed.
Speaking in Hausa, the cleric stated that “now, Tinubu’s wife is an infidel, and even as an infidel, she is the head amongst infidels.
In his words, “She’s the type that Allah has instructed us to kill because she’s among the leaders of infidels.”
The Imam also added that, “though married to a Muslim, Mrs. Tinubu should be killed because she is a pastor.”
“She’s a pastor,” he said. “That’s how the Quran instructed us to proceed. Leaders of infidels, Allah has directed that they should be killed.”
The video of the sermon, which has gone viral, has attracted condemnation from Nigerians.
In another article, published on February 24, 2024 by Gideon Ayeni, “More pressure has emerged for the arrest of the Islamic cleric who issued a fatwa for the killing of First Lady, Remi Tinubu for being a Christian and an infidel.”
In the latest development, the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has raised the alarm and called for urgent action against the Islamic preacher.
In a viral video, the cleric condemned the Muslim/Muslim ticket of President Bola Tinubu and his vice, Kashim Shettima, labeling it as a scam.
Shockingly, he went further to declare that Mrs. Tinubu, as an “infidel,” should be put to death in accordance with the Quran, without providing any specific reference to support his claim.
Thus, “Reacting to the cleric’s incendiary remarks and the fatwa on Remi Tinubu, YOWICAN in a communiqué following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja at the weekend strongly condemned the cleric’s statements and called for swift action to address the situation before it escalates further.
Expressing concern over the potential impact on national security, YOWICAN emphasized the urgency of prosecuting the cleric and urged authorities to restrict him from preaching in Nigeria as a deterrent to others.
The Youth Wing of CAN has also advised Christian Youths to defend themselves.
Meanwhile, the security agencies have not reacted to the development, while GWG.ng reports that the call from the group follows earlier condemnations from several quarters.
Further, reacting to the call for the killing of the First Lady, popular social media critic Daniel Regha noted that religious bigotry should not be tolerated or encouraged in the country.
He said, “Wishing death on someone isn’t cool, and religious bigotry should never be tolerated or encouraged.
“Religious discrimination remains one of our biggest problems in Nigeria. Many tend to play the religious card often but forget that we are first Nigerians before anything else. We have a long way to go.”
In his reaction, Sen. Shehu Sani has rebuked the Islamic Cleric over his call for the killing of the First Lady for being a Christian, he noted that calling for the death of the first lady is “utterly condemnable.”
Sani said, “Criticising the government and its policies is within the ambit of democratic rights, but calling for the killing of Senator Remi Tinubu by the religious cleric is unacceptable and utterly condemnable.”
For Ebuka Nwafor, he urged the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the cleric.
“However, the security agencies need to invite that cleric and prosecute him with the evidence, facts, and proof at hand.
“Why are they silent after seeing the video?” Nwafor said.
Nwafor added that the “Muslim Muslim ticket is active, and the cleric says President Tinubu’s wife is the leader of the infidels.
“Imagine what Christians are passing through in Northern Nigeria. This is a serious submission.”
For Olusopa James, he berated the North in his reaction when he said, “Religious cleric or religious extremist? I don’t see that extremist as a religious cleric. He’s a disgrace to the North and to Islam.”
While Sizzle noted that the Islamic cleric walks free despite his call for the murder of the wife of the president, he stated that the entire village would have been set “ablaze” if the statement had been made by an Igbo man.
“I don’t support Tinubu or APC, but this is unacceptable. If an Igbo man had said this by now, his entire village would have been set ablaze by the army.
“24 hours later, DSS has not made any arrests. The actual Jihadi terrorists are getting bolder with their public utterances.”
For Catia Kyen, she alleged that Nigeria will never be united because of the Muslims.
“This country can never be one, and the Northern Muslims will always be part of what will make that happen,” she said.
For an X user identified as Lord of Warri, he threatened bloodletting should anything happen to the first lady.
He said, “A threat to OluRemi is a threat to the Itsekiri nation, regardless of her political position or stance.
“To forget that your own people are all over Yoruba land and itsekiri land to make such a statement.
“Try something like that; we will clean Warri and all itsekiri lands of your Muslim people.”
Member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Islamic cleric who called for the killing of First Lady, Sen Oluremi Tinubu.
The son of the former Kaduna State governor said the cleric should keep his apology to himself, adding that the authorities should arrest and prosecute him.
El-Rufai said this while reacting to the viral video of the cleric stating that Tinubu’s wife should be killed for being a pastor, and a leader of infidels (Christians).
At the time of filing this report, neither the first lady, the presidency, the Department of State Service, DSS, nor the police had responded to the cleric’s sermon.
