Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of several children during a stampede at a private funfair in Ibadan on Wednesday. The governor described the incident as avoidable, attributing it to a lack of proper organization by the event’s planners.
Governor Makinde, speaking on Friday while receiving a delegation of South-East PDP leaders in Ibadan, announced the cancellation of his planned birthday lecture in Ebonyi State and his birthday celebration on December 25, as a mark of respect for the deceased children.
The South-East PDP delegation, led by Dr. Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees and a former Senate President, visited the governor to commiserate with him and the people of Oyo State. The delegation included notable figures such as former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu, former PDP National Secretary Senator Ben Obi, and other PDP leaders.
A Sobering Moment for Oyo State
Governor Makinde recounted how the tragic incident unfolded while he was preparing for his trip to Ebonyi. He emphasized that the loss of innocent lives was particularly painful and could have been prevented.
“This is a deeply sobering moment for me and the people of Oyo State. The incident claimed the lives of innocent children, and as a leader, I cannot celebrate while families are grieving. I have canceled all celebratory events, including my birthday party, to honor the departed souls,” Makinde stated.
He also expressed gratitude to the South-East PDP leaders for their solidarity, noting that their visit was a significant show of support. “Your physical presence to commiserate with us demonstrates your love and unity with Oyo State during this difficult time,” he added.
South-East PDP Expresses Condolences
Dr. Wabara, speaking on behalf of the South-East PDP delegation, extended their heartfelt condolences to Governor Makinde and the people of Oyo State. He commended the governor’s decision to prioritize the welfare of his people over political engagements, saying:
“We share in your grief, and our visit here is to let you know that when Oyo cries, the South-East also cries. The tragedy that occurred has cast a shadow over this festive season, and we join you in mourning the young lives lost.”
Wabara also lauded the governor’s directive for a thorough investigation into the incident, expressing hope that lessons would be learned to prevent future occurrences.
Congratulations to New PDP Leaders
During the visit, Governor Makinde congratulated Chief SKE Udeokoye on his affirmation as the National Secretary of the PDP by the Court of Appeal. He also extended congratulations to the new chairman of the Ebonyi State PDP, urging both leaders to provide firm and exemplary leadership.
“Leadership requires fairness and firmness, and I trust that you will rise to the occasion. With experienced mentors like Senator Obi by your side, I have no doubt that you will succeed,” Makinde said.
The governor’s response to the tragedy highlights his commitment to his people during challenging times and serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in public events.
