Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I, assuring the royal family of the state government’s full support and commitment to a befitting burial for the revered monarch.

The governor received a formal condolence visit on Monday from a delegation comprising the former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) and Aare Mayegun of Ibadanland, Chief Bayo Oyero; the monarch’s younger brother, Mr. Osuolale Owolabi Olakulehin; and his son, Aremo Olasumbo Owolabi.

While receiving the delegation in his office, Governor Makinde said the late Olubadan’s passing was a significant loss to Ibadanland and Oyo State, noting that his administration would stand by the family during this difficult time.

“We never want our elders to leave us. We always want them to stay. But our bodies are designed by God for a time,” the governor said. “I commiserate with the family and the people of Ibadanland. The government will support the family and play its part, including organizing a befitting burial for Kabiyesi.”

Governor Makinde also offered words of comfort to the royal family, revealing a personal connection to the day. “Coincidentally, today marks the 13th anniversary of my father’s passing. I understand how it feels. I pray for strength for the entire family.”

Earlier, Chief Oyero, speaking on behalf of the family, officially informed the governor of the monarch’s demise and expressed appreciation for the state government’s role in his ascension and reign.

“We are here with gratitude to God and to formally inform Your Excellency of the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Frederick Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors early this morning,” Oyero said.

“We thank you, especially for approving his ascension despite earlier controversies and for the historic coronation ceremony your administration organized.”

Oba Olakulehin, who marked his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025, ascended the throne in July 2024 as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
