Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced plans for a significant overhaul of the state’s education sector in 2025. Speaking during a media chat on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) on Saturday, the governor emphasized that his administration has been strategically reallocating resources to achieve more impactful results in education.
Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to improving education in the state, noting that while progress has been made, more work is needed to address existing challenges. The governor also observed a minute of silence for the 35 children who tragically lost their lives in a stampede in Ibadan earlier in the week, describing the incident as a monumental tragedy. He further reflected on the avoidable nature of both the stampede and the January 2024 Bodija explosion, urging all stakeholders to take responsibility for preventing such occurrences in the future.
Education and Economic Expansion
The governor highlighted his administration’s consistent prioritization of education, including surpassing UNESCO’s recommended budgetary allocation for the sector. He acknowledged the need for an estimated ₦60 billion to meet the sector’s demands, stating, “We are rearranging resources to do more for education. Since assuming office, we have consistently exceeded the UNESCO benchmark.”
Makinde also touched on his administration’s economic policies, explaining the need to make sometimes difficult decisions to break the cycle of poverty. He pointed to initiatives like the development of housing estates and the construction of the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, emphasizing their potential to stimulate the state’s economy.
“Our goal is to expand opportunities and create an environment where residents can thrive. Breaking out of poverty requires bold actions, and this government is ready to take those steps for the benefit of the people,” he said.
On Budget Performance and Tax Reforms
Governor Makinde reported steady progress in Oyo’s budget performance, which has improved from 48% in 2019 to over 70% in 2024. This, he said, has contributed to stability in project execution and improved living standards across the state.
Addressing the Federal Government’s Tax Reform Bill, the governor clarified that while he supports meaningful tax reforms, he advocates for broader consultations with stakeholders before implementation. He criticized the lack of proper engagement, stating, “It’s important to align with stakeholders to ensure the reforms are effective and acceptable.”
Circular Road and Land Development Controversy
Responding to allegations of land grabbing, Makinde dismissed the claims, describing them as baseless. He explained that projects like the Circular Road are designed to drive development and that the road would serve as Nigeria’s first motorway, with limited exit points to enhance its functionality.
Commitment to Progress
Governor Makinde assured residents that his administration remains committed to improving Oyo State. “This is your government, and we will continue to make decisions in the best interest of the people,” he said.
