On Monday, March 18, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the apprehension of a man named Kayode Cole following his threatening remarks against the EFCC’s executive chairman, Ola Olukoyede. According to a report from the Daily Post, Cole was taken into custody in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The arrest was made in response to a threat made by Cole on his Instagram account. The ominous statement was made on February 1, 2024, as a comment on a post by a well-known blogger. The blog post shed light on the EFCC chairman’s revelation of alleged money laundering activities taking place within religious circles. The fraudulent funds, amounting to 7 billion naira, were said to be linked to a religious group.
In his comment, Cole predicted the death of the EFCC chairman within a period of six months. His exact words were, “He will be dead in six months. This man will be dead in 6 months; remember, I said it.”
Upon further investigation, Cole claimed that he had only made those remarks to seek attention. However, this statement led to his detention, pending further investigation and legal proceedings. The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest and emphasized the seriousness of threats against public officials.
