Ibadan City, often referred to as the “Home of the Firsts” due to its historical accomplishments and rich infrastructural development, is once again making headlines with the expected appointment of the next Olubadan.

The Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has been positioned as the next Olubadan, bringing about a seamless transition within the monarchical system.

Following the unfortunate passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, the palace drummers will make their way from Alli-Iwo to the Ita Baale palace of Oba Olakulehin, marking his symbolic ascension to the throne.

This highly anticipated decision comes as no surprise, considering Olakulehin’s esteemed position within the Olubadan system and his family’s longstanding involvement in Ibadan’s political landscape. Notably, Olakulehin’s son, Sunbo Owolabi, previously served as the commissioner for water resources during the tenure of the late former governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Historically, the succession of a new Olubadan leads to promotions and shifts in the hierarchical structure, particularly within the Balogun line. This means that the appointment of Oba Olakulehin will inevitably lead to further changes and advancements within the Olubadan system. It is important to note the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Mohood Lekan Balogun, also known as Alli Okunmade II, who served as the Olubadan of Ibadanland for two years before his demise.

The announcement of Oba Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland represents a significant milestone in the city’s leadership. The unique succession system of the Olubadan stool ensures a traditional 21 days of mourning before the official announcement of the next Olubadan. Hence, Oba Olakulehin’s appointment will be made public after this period, solidifying his role as the next leader of Ibadan.
