Zainab Duke-Abiola, one of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola’s wives, has revealed a startling account of an incident where her husband was ambushed by armed robbers on his way to visit the Olubadan of Ibadan in Oyo state.
According to Zainab, the armed robbers recognized Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, and began shouting “MKO, is our man, Man of the people” upon sighting him. Surprisingly, the robbers lowered their guns and laid flat on the ground in a show of reverence for the iconic politician.
Zainab recounted that Abiola, instead of fleeing, approached the robbers and gave them money, urging them to abandon their criminal ways and return to school. Shockingly, Zainab revealed that one of the armed robbers later became a governor of a Yoruba state, while two others were elected as members of the House of Representatives.
“Chief told them to go back to school and come to his house anytime they needed money. One of those people became the governor of a Yoruba state, he is alive, about two or so became House of Representatives’ members. Why are they not repeating this story,” Zainab said.
The incident, which occurred in the presence of some American visitors and Abiola’s driver, showcases the deep respect and admiration the late politician commanded, even among those who had resorted to criminal activities. Zainab’s revelation highlights the untold stories and the lasting impact Abiola had on the lives of many Nigerians, including those he encountered in unexpected circumstances.
