A video has emerged showing the public humiliation and physical assault of a Nigerian man by an irate mob. The video, shared on social media over the weekend, depicts a harrowing scene of the man being accused of being homosexual and subjected to horrific violence.
According to the footage, the young men are seen tying the man’s hands behind his back and parading him through the streets. As they move, the mob is witnessed hitting the man on the head with wooden planks, and even breaking bottles on his head. At one point, a suggestion is made to throw the man into a dirty gutter, which the mob promptly carries out, continuing to beat him as he lies in the filthy water.
The video has prompted outrage from viewers, who have pointed out the glaring double standard in the treatment of the man accused of homosexuality, compared to the often lenient handling of serious criminals such as rapists, murderers, pedophiles, and corrupt politicians.
“It is deeply concerning to see such inhumane treatment being meted out to a person based solely on their perceived sexual orientation,” said a human rights activist. “While we condemn all forms of violence, the selective and brutal targeting of those in consensual same-sex relationships is particularly alarming and must be addressed.”
The incident has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria, where homosexuality is still criminalized, leading to widespread discrimination and violence against the community.
