Two years after his arrest, trial, and detention in Benin Republic, Yoruba Nation advocate and activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho), reveals that he is now a free man.
Igboho, who was arrested on July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organization at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic while on his way to Germany, has now been officially told to “go and sin no more.”
Before his arrest, he had fled Nigeria when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) invaded his residence in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, leading to the death of two people, arrests, and the destruction of property worth millions of naira.
Upon his arrival in the West African country, he was arrested, tried, and imprisoned for several months. After his release, he was not permitted to leave the country.
However, on Sunday, Igboho stated in a statement and accompanying video that he is now a free man.
In the statement, Igboho mentioned that his late mother’s body is still in the mortuary as the family awaits his arrival to give her a dignified burial.
Igboho says in the statement: “First of all, I sincerely appreciate God Almighty, the Master of the Universe, for making this day possible. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide for their love and support both before and after the loss of my dear mother. Although her body is still in the morgue, awaiting my presence to give her the honorable burial she deserves.
“I would like to extend special thanks to President Talon of Benin Republic and all members of his cabinet. My gratitude also goes to my heroic father, Prof. Banji Akintoye, and Prof. Wole Soyinka for their support throughout this struggle. May God reward you, Baba, for standing courageously for our Yoruba nation and for me. You promised to stand by me during my ordeal in the Benin Republic, and you have fulfilled that promise.”
“I also do not want to forget to appreciate former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Baba Ayo Adebanjo for their roles, although freedom can only be given by God. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank all religious leaders, pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshipers for their prayers day and night.
“Our royal fathers, obas, and chiefs in Yoruba land, your love and support are greatly appreciated. However, we need more of your support to liberate our land from bondage because Yoruba land belongs to us.
“Although I have many Obas on my list, I would like to thank specifically the Olugbon of Orile Igbon and Deputy Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, Kabiesi Oba Topspin o ni Bariga of Bariga, Oba Tejuoso, the Oni Kenta of Orile Kenta, and the Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan Obateru, for your immense love and support.
“I must not forget to appreciate the mega rally in the USA under Prophet Ologunloluwa and the Directorate under the leadership of Barrister Ogedengbe. Special thanks to Ilana Omo Oodua Canada and Igbega Omo Oodua USA and Canada.
“Chief Dele Momodu, I genuinely appreciate your support, sir. Thank you so much. Special thanks to all media outlets, both print and electronic, including online media.
“To all our political class and obas in Yoruba land, let’s join hands to make Yoruba great. I appreciate the support of all my brothers from the East.”
