Isiokpo, Rivers State – Ahead of its official launch, Wigwe University has revealed its accommodation fees and plans, positioning it as the most expensive university in Nigeria.
The university, founded by the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, who tragically passed away in a helicopter accident along with his wife and son in February 2024, has appointed Professor Miles Davis from the United States as its first Vice-Chancellor.
According to the details published on the university’s website, two apartment plans are available for students. The luxury single-bedroom plan costs a staggering N1 million per month, while the premium one-en-suite bedroom plan is priced at N3.8 million per session.
Other accommodation options include the Classic 1 Plan at N3,707,000 per session and the Classic 2 Plan at N3,500,000 per session.
The high-end accommodation fees at Wigwe University have drawn widespread attention, with many questioning the accessibility and affordability of the institution for the average Nigerian student.
“It’s only unreasonable thieves that will send their children there,” commented a reader on the #GbengalawyBlog, reflecting the sentiment that the university’s pricing may be out of reach for the majority of Nigerian families.
The launch of Wigwe University is eagerly anticipated, but the astronomical accommodation costs have raised concerns about the university’s commitment to inclusivity and providing quality education to a diverse student population.
As the country continues to grapple with the challenges of higher education, the Wigwe University case highlights the need for a balanced approach that balances academic excellence with affordability and accessibility for all.
