The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has strongly condemned allegations leveled against the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, describing them as false, baseless, and politically motivated.
The allegations, which surfaced in a press release by Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), accuse Prof. Fasina of sexual harassment and misuse of security agencies to intimidate associates of a university staff member. However, NAUS has dismissed these claims, calling them a calculated attempt to tarnish the Vice Chancellor’s reputation.
In a statement signed by its National Director of Campus Interventions, Comrade Ologe John Tobiloba, NAUS reaffirmed its solidarity with Prof. Fasina and expressed confidence in his leadership. The student body warned against the misuse of serious accusations for political or personal vendettas, emphasizing that such actions undermine genuine victims of sexual harassment.
NAUS outlined its position on the matter as follows:
1. Solidarity with Prof. Fasina: The association firmly stands by the Vice Chancellor and rejects the allegations as defamatory.
2. Demand for Evidence: NAUS challenges Lere Olayinka and others making the claims to present concrete proof through proper legal channels.
3. Condemnation of Harassment: While the association opposes any form of harassment, it equally condemns the weaponization of false allegations.
4. Support for Due Process: NAUS urges all parties to allow legal and institutional processes to address any grievances.
5. Appeal for Calm: The public is encouraged to disregard the allegations while NAUS continues to monitor developments.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s academic institutions and ensuring a safe and just environment for students and staff.
