The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, has been accused of scamming a Nigerian-American doctor out of $180,000 through a series of investment and romance scams.
The victim, a 16-year resident of the United States who hails from Osun State, had reached out to the Ooni with the intention of setting up a network of free medical clinics in her home state. Eager to contribute to her community, the doctor trusted the Ooni’s guidance and began sending money to various bank accounts he provided, believing the funds would go towards facilitating her noble project.
However, evidence shared by the victim suggests the Ooni systematically exploited her goodwill, making false promises and manipulating her into parting with large sums of money over an extended period. Receipts, private messages, and recorded audio calls are said to document the Ooni’s scamming tactics in vivid detail.
Despite the victim’s attempts to recover her money through legitimate channels in Nigeria, her efforts have been reportedly stifled at every turn. Undeterred, she has now decided to take her case to the public and explore avenues for justice in the United States as well.
The victim is set to release a series of video explanations detailing her harrowing experience, and will also participate in a live Twitter Space to give the public a comprehensive account of the Ooni’s alleged misdeeds. Several media outlets and social media influencers have pledged to amplify the story and provide updates over the next six weeks.
When reached for comment, the Ooni’s palace declined to address the specific allegations, stating that the traditional ruler does not engage in public disputes. However, the palace emphasized the Ooni’s commitment to the development and well-being of his people.
As this explosive story unfolds, many are left wondering whether one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional rulers will be held accountable for the alleged betrayal of trust. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the credibility of the country’s traditional institutions.
