The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet on Wednesday informed Nigerians that the excessive heat being experienced in the country presently would remain for a while.
NiMET disclosed this in its weather and climate update posted on its official X page on Wednesday.
NiMet wrote: “Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Use sunscreen and apply it generously. Keep windows and doors closed during the hottest parts of the day and use fans or air conditioning if available. Check on vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic medical conditions. Stay updated on weather forecasts and heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities”.
NiMet also emphasized the importance of proper hydration and advised Nigerians to drink plenty of water and avoid excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration. They also cautioned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, as temperatures can become dangerously high within minutes.
The agency further mentioned that tackling climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to prevent extreme weather events such as prolonged heatwaves. They encouraged the public to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint, such as using energy-efficient appliances, reducing waste, and utilizing renewable energy sources.
NiMet’s advisory serves as a reminder for Nigerians to take precautions during the ongoing heatwave and prioritize their health and well-being. By following these recommendations and staying informed about weather conditions, individuals can better protect themselves and their loved ones from the potential risks associated with excessive heat.
