The Ogun State Government has suspended the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, for six months following his public assault on a 73-year-old man, Chief Abraham Areola.
The suspension was announced in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, and obtained by Premium News.
According to the statement, the decision was made in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council under Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021. The government cited the monarch’s uncivil behavior, which was deemed inappropriate for a traditional ruler.
A viral video of the incident showed Oba Ogunjobi cursing Chief Areola and his family over an alleged conspiracy against him. The monarch also allegedly threatened to use his influence with law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to deal with the elderly chief.
In the official statement, the government emphasized its commitment to upholding the dignity of individuals and preserving the sanctity of the traditional institution. It further stated that both the monarch and his victim had been invited for interrogation before the suspension was enforced.
The government confirmed that Oba Ogunjobi has been stripped of the paraphernalia of his office while investigations continue to determine his culpability.
