The renowned Nigerian singer, actress, and humanitarian Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, announced her sudden demise in a heartfelt statement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Onwenu was rushed to the hospital after a performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life. Sadly, she passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Ogunlende brothers expressed their profound grief, describing Onwenu as a “national treasure, an icon and legend, who inspired multiple generations of Nigerians and people around the world with her music, acting, philanthropy and humanitarian efforts.”
The family extended their gratitude to those who were with Onwenu in her final moments, including Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, as well as Messrs Ajayi and Mr. Okpara. They also thanked the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for his condolences and support.
The Ogunlende brothers also expressed their appreciation to the staff at Reddington Hospital for their efforts in trying to save Onyeka’s life.
Onyeka Onwenu was a beloved figure in Nigeria, known for her iconic songs like “One Love” and her work as an actress and philanthropist.
