United Kingdom has released documentary on former Senate Deputy Speaker, Ike Ekweremadu over his conviction for organ trafficking.
The Nigerian politician was convicted, along with his wife Beatrice and their doctor, of organ trafficking under the Modern Slavery Act, the first sentence of its kind in a case.
Ekweremadu, 60; his wife Beatrice, 56, and a doctor. Obinna Obeta, 51, was found guilty after a six-week trial in Old Bailey of assisting a young man to travel to the UK with a view to exploiting him.
However, the lawmaker’s daughter Sonia was acquitted by the court.
Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctors conspired to take the 21-year-old Lagos street vendor to London to exploit his kidneys, the jury said. Prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court Ekweremadus and Obeta viewed the man and other potential donors as “available assets – back-up assets”.
He said they entered into an “emotionally cold deal” with the man.
Davies told the jury Ekweremadu’s actions showed “demand, dishonesty and hypocrisy”.
He said Ekweremadu, who owns multiple properties and has 80 employees, “agreed to reward someone for a kidney transplant for his daughter – a poor man who kept her at arm’s length, did not investigate, did not investigate with her, it was for His own politics.” , he didn’t want direct contact”.
Davies added: “What he consented to was not only for the benefit of his daughter Sonia, it was exploitative, it was criminal. To say that he acted out of love for his daughter is irrefutable. Their clinical needs cannot be justified. at the expense of exploiting the poor.”
Ekweremadu, who denies the charges, told the court he was a victim of fraud. Oberta has also denied the allegations, claiming the man did not offer his kidney a reward and that his actions were disinterested. Beatrice has denied any knowledge of the alleged plot. Sonia did not make any statement.
Judge Mr Jeremy Johnson will deliver his sentence at a later date.
