The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of a student tragically killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer in Ibadan.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of IGE Zone II, Ms. Yemi Ojo, the commissioner visited the bereaved family alongside officials from the Ministry of Education. The condolence visit took place at the family’s residence in Ibadan.
Describing the incident as both devastating and unacceptable, Hon. Olayiwola condemned the reckless use of firearms in public spaces and emphasized the need for immediate action. He assured the family that a full investigation would be launched and that measures would be taken to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
“This is an avoidable tragedy. We must prioritize the safety of our children at all times,” he stated.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the grieving family and ensuring accountability for those responsible. The commissioner offered prayers for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
The father of the deceased, overcome with grief, expressed appreciation for the government’s prompt response but spoke of his profound loss.
“Since my wife passed away seven years ago, I’ve been raising my children alone. Now, death has taken my son. The pain is unimaginable. I don’t know how I will survive this,” he said through tears.
