The Oyo State Government has launched a vigorous campaign to combat the rising menace of illegal arms, light weapons, and undocumented migrants throughout the state. As part of this initiative, the government has promised to reward security personnel and residents who assist in apprehending smugglers involved in trafficking arms, ammunition, and illegal immigrants.
Retired Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration (ACG) Segun Adegoke, serving as the Special Adviser on Homeland Security to the Oyo State Governor, made this announcement during a recent sensitization tour of border towns. Leading a team of security officers from the Department of State Security (DSS), police, immigration, customs, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Adegoke visited several communities, including Iwere-Ile, Saki West, Iseyin, and Ibarapa North.
Adegoke revealed that the governor’s directive stemmed from alarming security reports indicating the interception of trucks laden with arms, ammunition, and illegal migrants. He also mentioned allegations of collusion between some local residents and smugglers.
The goal of the visit, he explained, was to educate community members about the dangers posed by the proliferation of small arms and illegal immigrants, which jeopardize the safety and security of lives and properties. He noted that these issues have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s security crises, including civil conflicts, insurgency, human trafficking, armed robbery, kidnappings, and drug-related crimes.
Adegoke stated, “We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to these issues. It is our collective responsibility to take measures to stem the tide.” He called for enhanced cooperation among security agencies to tighten border controls and improve vigilance against illegal arms importation.
During interactions with local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and border patrol security personnel, Adegoke emphasized the importance of community engagement, urging residents, particularly the youth, to report any suspicious activities to authorities. He also encouraged community leaders to leverage their influence to discourage the possession and use of illegal weapons.
Local government chairmen and traditional rulers expressed their commitment to intensifying efforts to secure the state’s border towns from the threats posed by illegal arms and migrants.
To promote accountability, Adegoke assured security personnel that there would be rewards for those who successfully apprehend offenders involved in illegal firearm activities. He reinforced the need for a culture of peace and unity within the communities to help mitigate the demand for illegal arms and reduce the influx of both arms and immigrants.
