The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Tertiary Institutions in Oyo State, led by its Chairman, Dr. Kola Lawal, visited Governor Seyi Makinde at his private residence in Ibadan to offer condolences on the passing of his elder brother, Mr. Sunday Makinde.
During the visit, JAC representatives, including union leaders from various tertiary institutions across the state, expressed their sympathy and prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul. Dr. Lawal praised Mr. Sunday Makinde’s integrity and the positive impact he had on those around him. He also prayed for divine comfort and strength for the Makinde family and the entire state during this period of mourning.
Beyond the condolence message, the JAC Chairman commended Governor Makinde for his dedication to the development of tertiary education in Oyo State. He particularly acknowledged the recent 25% increase in subvention to tertiary institutions, which was aimed at facilitating the implementation of the new minimum wage from January 2025. However, he raised concerns that some institutions had yet to disburse the approved wage increase to their staff, unlike Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, which had already done so.
In response, Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to the JAC delegation for their visit, prayers, and support. He acknowledged the vital role of the academic community in the state’s progress and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing tertiary education. Addressing the wage implementation concerns, he assured the delegation that he would investigate the delays and take necessary steps upon resuming official duties.
The visit concluded with a solemn prayer session for the Makinde family and the state, as JAC members reiterated their commitment to supporting the government’s efforts in improving tertiary education in Oyo State.
