The Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Olufemi Adebowale Awakan, has pledged to recover all internal revenue owed to the state and underscored the need for residents to make timely tax payments.

In a recent interview, Awakan expressed his determination to enhance the state’s revenue generation and commended the leadership of Oyo State Governor Engineer Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde. He described the governor as a “Primus inter pares,” praising his dedication to improving the state for its residents.

“I commend Governor Makinde for his exemplary leadership in governing Oyo State,” Awakan stated, adding, “His commitment to leaving the state better than he found it reflects his genuine care for the people.”

Since his appointment as Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue in November 2021, Awakan noted that the governor has provided unwavering support without interfering in the board’s operations. He recalled that on his first day, the governor urged him to “do the right thing and not increase any tax rate,” and has consistently recognized the team’s efforts.

Looking towards the future, Awakan acknowledged the challenges posed by upcoming reforms in the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) sector due to federal government initiatives. He called upon wealthy individuals to fulfill their tax obligations, particularly starting January 2025, which includes addressing any arrears.

“We will not tolerate tax evasion,” Awakan declared, emphasizing a collaborative effort with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Joint Tax Board (JTB) to ensure the collection of all due revenues.

He reassured residents that the board would operate within the legal framework as stipulated in the Nigerian Constitution and relevant legislations, affirming, “We will adhere strictly to the law and will not impose any charges beyond what is legally prescribed.”

Awakan urged citizens to cooperate with the government, highlighting the significant developments being undertaken in Oyo State, including infrastructure projects and timely salary payments for workers, which have positive ripple effects on the state’s economy.

“I appeal to everyone to support the government,” he said. “We cannot continue to place all the responsibilities on the government. If we neglect our tax duties, the only alternative for the government would be to borrow funds to fulfill its budgetary obligations.”

He reminded residents of the potential penalties for tax defaulters and announced that the government is prepared to take legal action against non-compliance through the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT).

In conclusion, Awakan reiterated the importance of fulfilling tax obligations, urging, “PAY YOUR TAX” to help the government meet its commitments to the state.
