The Anambra State Government has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of Ogechukwu Okafor, following allegations that her husband, Pastor Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi, was responsible for her death. The Ministry of Women and Social Welfare confirmed the details of the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
The incident occurred on August 13, 2024, and was reported by the victim’s family, who expressed concerns over possible irregularities surrounding the circumstances of her death, including alleged threats from her husband. Ibeabuchi, a pastor from the Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area, purportedly informed family members that Ogechukwu had fallen from a four-story building.
However, her uncle, Samuel Onuorah from Abatete, raised suspicions about the husband’s account of events. He reported that upon visiting the mortuary, the family discovered that Ogechukwu sustained stab wounds to her neck and chest, contradicting Ibeabuchi’s claim of an accidental fall.
Further allegations from the family suggest that Ibeabuchi had sinister intentions regarding their newborn child, with claims that he intended to use the baby for ritualistic purposes. During a struggle over the baby, Ogechukwu was reportedly stabbed in the process.
The deceased’s family is now calling on the state government to intervene and deliver justice for their daughter. They have urged community leaders, human rights activists, and the public to rally support for the cause.
In her response, Hon. Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, called on stakeholders and civil society organizations to assist in amplifying the call for justice. She assured the public that she would inform the governor’s wife about the case to ensure that Ogechukwu receives the justice she deserves.
