Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and current Pro-Chancellor of Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, made a significant contribution of 50 million naira to the institution during its convocation ceremony over the weekend.
The convocation celebration according to him, marked a culmination of a year-long planning process, showcasing his dedication to the growth and development of the university. In his address to the graduating students, he shared a powerful narrative emphasizing the transformative power of education and the human spirit’s resilience amidst adversity.
Obi recounted the inspiring story of Mr. Johnathan Luke Wood, the youngest President of the University of California, Sacramento. According to him, Wood’s journey from challenging circumstances, including his mother’s incarceration and frequent school suspensions, was a remarkable illustration of determination and perseverance. Obi noted that despite being sent out of school 42 times, Wood refused to let his past dictate his future, ultimately achieving remarkable success.
“This story exemplifies the infinite potential that exists within us all when hope, opportunity, and hard work converge,” Obi stated, reinforcing the role of educational institutions like Dominican University in cultivating talent and empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds.
During the event, Obi reiterated his belief that education is a fundamental pillar of societal progress and a crucial foundation for building a brighter future. He urged the graduating class to leverage the knowledge and values they acquired to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing that true success lies in giving back rather than merely taking.
As he concluded his address, Obi expressed his unwavering support for initiatives aimed at inspiring hope and fostering a new, productive Nigeria.
