The Otabor family is in mourning as they confirm the passing of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor. According to a statement issued by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the family, Ruth passed away in the early hours of Sunday August 31, 2025 succumbing to complications from a grievous accident that occurred just weeks before.
In the same formal announcement, the family shared:
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025 at about 06:30 Hrs.”
They also appealed for privacy to mourn quietly, indicating that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Ruth’s untimely death followed a tragic accident that occurred near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 just six days after she graduated. A truck affiliated with the Dangote Group struck her, severely injuring her left leg, which had to be amputated due to the extent of the damage. Despite urgent medical interventions, Ruth’s condition critically deteriorated, leading to her death nearly three weeks after the accident.
News of Ruth’s passing has elicited widespread emotional responses from fans, Nigerians, and public figures, who shared their grief on social media. The accident has also intensified discussions on road safety and corporate accountability, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks. Many Nigerians have voiced frustration, linking the tragedy to a pattern of road accidents involving Dangote-affiliated trucks and calling for stricter oversight.
The Otabor family remains focused on grieving privately amid overwhelming public sympathy and media attention. While funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, many are waiting patiently to honor Ruth’s memory.
