Operatives of Amotekun corps have allegedly shot dead a student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA).
The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday which led to a protest by students of the institution who stormed major streets in Akure, the state capital.
It will be recalled that in July 2022, some aggrieved youths and students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, in their hundreds protested in front of the state secretariat, Alagbaka, in Akure, over the killing of Folarera Ademola, an ND1 student of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, allegedly by an operative of the Amotekun Corps.
The protest was, however, led by the President of the f National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Ondo state chapter.
The protesters blocked the major road in Akure, including the road leading to the Governor’s office in the state capital.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the deceased identified as Tope Elijah was a final year student of the Economics department of FUTA before he was allegedly killed by operatives of Amotekun in the state.
According to the President of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Ondo state chapter, Akinọla Elijah Temitope, the deceased was at a wedding ceremony on Saturday when the operatives of Amotekun suddenly shot into the air to celebrate the groom who happens to be one of them.
The NANS president said it was the gun that was shot into the air that eventually killed the deceased.
He said, “Immediately the Amotekun operatives noticed that the gun has killed the boy, they all disappeared from the scene. It was some of the policemen on the ground that helped to carry the corpse to the hospital.
“What we are asking for is for the authority of the corps to provide the officer that perpetrated the act and hand him over to the police for prosecution. We give the Amotekun just 48 hours to do this and if not, we will start another round of protest.
Efforts to speak with the authority of Amotekun proved abortive as of the time of this report.
