The Ogbomoso Diaspora Development Forum, a group of concerned indigenes, has raised alarm over several issues they believe are stifling development in the ancient town of Ogbomoso. In a statement signed by its President, Chief Olusegun Olawale, and Secretary, Reverend Remilekun Adeola, the group identified religious conflicts, insecurity, and needless litigations as key obstacles to progress.

The statement, made available to journalists on Friday, highlighted that the town’s local courts are inundated with land disputes and other civil and criminal cases, which undermine peace and harmonious coexistence.

One notable instance of insecurity cited was the tragic killing of Mr. Gbenga Owolabi, a US-based hotelier and native of Ogbomoso, who was kidnapped and murdered. The incident has forced his family to relocate to the United States for fear of being targeted. Additionally, the controversial trespass on the property of JALadeji and Sons Limited has further underscored the prevalence of land disputes in the community.

The group also expressed concerns about the upcoming Ogbomoso Cradle festival scheduled for December 2024, noting that insecurity, poor infrastructure, and bad roads pose significant threats to its success. They warned that the festival might fail if these challenges are not addressed.

Religious disputes were also highlighted as a major problem. The ongoing litigation between the Kabiyesi Oba Olaoye Ghandi and the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land is seen as a divisive issue that could cast a shadow over the planned carnival.

Furthermore, the group pointed out that land disputes extend beyond Ogbomoso to neighboring towns such as Iresa, Ikoyi, and Iya Oje. For example, the Ologbon of Ile Igbon is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the Ayinla Afingbaoge family.

“These issues, fueled by the actions of some local leaders, are impediments to the growth of our community,” the group lamented. They called for a collaborative approach to resolve these challenges, emphasizing that lasting development can only be achieved through peace and unity.
