Renowned criminologist Tade becomes President of Nigeria Society for Criminology

Renowned Criminologist at the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan Professor Oludayo Tade has emerged as the pioneer president of the Nigeria Society for Criminology (NSC).

Professor Tade, alongside other executives, was inaugurated at the Second International conference of the Society, which was held at the Divine Love Retreat and Conference Centre in Abuja.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society, Professor Etannibi Alemika stated that the constitution of the pioneer executives was an important step towards positioning the criminology society for a greater future of scholarship in the field and interface with government in security policy suggestions and recommendation.

Flanked by the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Professor Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf who is a professor of criminology and gender studies at the Kano State University, Professor Alemika stated listed that names of other executive members as; Professor Nneka P. Oli (first vice president), Prof. Maikano Madaki (Second Vice President), Associate Professor Gullengs Daskyes (General Secretary), Dr Augustine Idom (Assistant Secretary), Associate Professor Lanre Ikuteyijo (Treasurer), Associate Professor Linus Akor (Financial Secretary), Nasir Zango (Auditor), Associate Professor Philip N. Ndubueze (Editor-in-Chief), Dr James Odivwri (Associate Editor), Dr Hassan Abdulazeez (Associate Editor), Dr Okoro Paul Mmahi (Associate Editor) and Bilques Yusuf (Communication Officer).

Professor Alemika tasked the new executives to mobilize criminologists and engender professionalism, promote mentoring of young criminologists, encourage gender inclusion in developing more women criminologists as well as ensure that the society contributes to security policies in Nigeria.

The theme of the Second International Conference was “Policing in Times of Crises” where scholars across the country presented theoretical and research papers on policing, its evolving nature across the globe with recommendations on deepening community policing.

While responding on behalf of the new executives, Professor Oludayo Tade who thanked the BOT and members for the confidence reposed in the inaugurated executives promised to uphold the constitution of the society and deepen professionalism in the field.

According to him, the executives would work together to contribute to policy debates around security, policing and other areas where the society has expertise.

“we thank the BOT and members for counting us worthy to serve in this capacity. It is a huge task, and we promise to work together to continue to build society and make it relevant in the research and policy corridors. we are going to tap from the expertise of our members to assist our country in navigating the security challenges.”
