The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of Omotola Odunsi, a rising Yoruba Nollywood actress best known for her role in the popular epic movie Lisabi, where she starred alongside actor Lateef Adedimeji.
Her death was confirmed late Thursday, July 31, by fellow actress and colleague Bakare Zainab, who took to Instagram to break the heartbreaking news. Although details surrounding the cause of death remain unclear, tributes and messages of disbelief have poured in from fans and colleagues alike.
“Goodnight. Omotola rest well,” Zainab simply captioned a photo of the late actress on her Instagram page, sending shockwaves across Nollywood.

The sudden passing of Omotola has left the entertainment industry reeling, especially among young Yoruba actors with whom she had built strong professional ties. Ashabi, one of the baby mamas of controversial street-hop artist Portable, also expressed deep sorrow over the news in an emotional post shared on social media.
“Omoh, dis one shock me oooo aunty Tola,” Ashabi wrote. “You’re one of the best actors I’m rooting for. Saw you earlier this year when I was shooting Deputy, and we promised to feature each other in our next project. But now, you laboured and didn’t wait to reap. What is life sef?”
She continued, “I remember nights you’d chat with me to give me hope and advice. Most of your wishes we talked about didn’t even come true. GOD, we can’t question you oooo. Death is deep.”
Omotola Odunsi, often described by colleagues as humble, gifted, and full of promise, had gradually carved a niche for herself in the Yoruba movie scene. Her performance in Lisabi, a historical drama that resonated widely with viewers for its powerful storytelling, brought her widespread recognition and industry respect.
The actress was seen by many as one of the next-generation talents poised to redefine Yoruba cinema. Her chemistry with co-stars and emotional depth in roles made her a fan favourite in recent years.
While her family has yet to issue an official statement, close industry sources say Omotola was working on several upcoming film projects and had been active on set just months ago.
Her untimely passing comes just days after the tragic death of Nigerian TikTok influencer Ms. Chinelo, popularly known as BigButFit, who reportedly died following a hernia surgery gone wrong. Ms. Chinelo, a body positivity advocate with a large social media following, was initially believed to have undergone a tummy procedure, sparking discussions on the dangers of elective surgeries. However, later reports clarified it was a hernia operation that led to her demise.
The back-to-back loss of two young Nigerian women in the spotlight—one in the world of cinema, the other in social media—has further reignited conversations about wellness, health risks, and the pressures faced by women in the entertainment space.
As tributes continue to pour in, colleagues and fans of Omotola Odunsi are remembering her not only for her artistry but also for her warmth, wisdom, and generous spirit.
Nollywood has lost another star—one whose light burned bright, even if for far too short a time.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
