According to medical experts, there are several reasons why women experience painful periods, and understanding these factors can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall health.

Here are seven potential reasons why some women experience painful periods (dysmenorrhea):

1. Endometriosis – This is a condition where the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and pain during menstruation.

2. Uterine fibroids – Non-cancerous growths in the uterus can cause cramps and heavy bleeding.

3. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) – An infection of the female reproductive organs can lead to painful periods.

4. Adenomyosis – This occurs when the uterine lining grows into the muscle wall of the uterus, leading to heavy, painful periods.

5. Cervical stenosis – A narrowing of the cervical opening can make menstrual flow more painful.

6. Ovarian cysts – Fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries can rupture and cause cramping.

7. Prostaglandin overproduction – Increased levels of prostaglandins, hormone-like compounds, can cause increased uterine contractions and pain.

If the painful periods are severe or interfere with daily life, it’s a good idea for the woman to see a gynecologist to determine the underlying cause and get appropriate treatment. Simple remedies like over-the-counter pain medication may help but more serious conditions may require medication or even surgery.
