Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, firmly condemned the recent wave of verbal attacks launched against Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State. These attacks stemmed from the arrest of a soldier who had been caught riding a motorcycle on a one-way.
In a press conference held at the Army Headquarters, Lt. General Lagbaja expressed his disappointment at the behavior of the soldiers who had made derogatory comments against the Governor. The soldier’s actions, he emphasized, did not represent the values and discipline of the Nigerian Army.
“The Nigerian Army prides itself on upholding the highest levels of professionalism and respect for all citizens, including the leadership of the various states across the country,” Lt. General Lagbaja declared. “The actions of one soldier should not tarnish the reputation of the entire army.”
He further explained that swift action had been taken to address the issue. The soldier responsible for the disparaging remarks towards Governor Sanwo-Olu had already been apprehended and was awaiting disciplinary measures. “We assure the public that appropriate action will be taken, in accordance with the military code of conduct, to ensure that such behavior is not tolerated within our ranks,” Lt. General Lagbaja assured.
The Chief of Army Staff further emphasized the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship between the military and civil authorities. He acknowledged the crucial role of state governments in providing security and maintaining law and order within their respective jurisdictions. Cooperation and respect between the two entities, he stressed, were vital for the overall progress and development of the nation.
“It is regrettable that this incident has occurred, and we will not take it lightly,” Lt. General Lagbaja reiterated. “We will continue to work diligently to ensure that all servicemen and women are reminded of their duty to uphold the law and respect all levels of authority.”
Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja also expressed his gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his understanding and cooperation in handling the situation. He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to maintaining a disciplined and responsible force, one that is dedicated to serving and protecting the Nigerian people.
