A survivor of a vicious assault by armed assailants on the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode expressway has come forward to share the harrowing details of his ordeal. The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying experience that unfolded on the ill-fated stretch of road.
According to the survivor, the attack occurred in the late afternoon, around 5 PM, when the armed perpetrators, equipped with AK-47 rifles, opened fire indiscriminately. The victim described the assailants as being “armed to the teeth,” indiscriminately shooting at passing vehicles.
“They even killed one person who was inside a Lexus car,” the survivor stated in a report by Vanguard News.
The victim and a group of approximately seven individuals were forcibly marched into the nearby bush by the armed kidnappers. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the survivor resorted to speaking Hausa, a common language in the region, in a desperate attempt to plead for his life.
“I started speaking Hausa to them begging them not to kill me, so they asked if I was a northerner but I said no, that I have once lived in Kebbi and Sokoto,” the victim recounted.
Despite his efforts, the kidnappers continued to force the captives deeper into the wilderness. During this ordeal, the assailants demanded money from the victims, and the survivor surrendered the sum of N103,000 and his mobile phone, fearing for his life.
The victim also revealed that another abducted driver, hailing from the Eastern region of Nigeria, had already paid the kidnappers N120,000 before their abduction.
“There was another driver from the east who said that the kidnappers had collected N120,000 from him just as we were abducted,” the survivor said.
Ultimately, the kidnappers released the survivor and the other driver from the East, while the remaining five captives were still being held by the armed assailants.
