A tanker carrying 60,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) overturned on Saturday, June 7, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Oremeji in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to reports, the tanker—bearing registration number KMC 692 ZE—lost control while in motion and veered off the road, crashing into a road divider. The incident caused a significant fuel spill, prompting a rapid emergency response.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday. He noted that the agency received a distress call at exactly 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and a team led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Adekola (Mrs) was immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, our team found the overturned HOWO trailer tanker with its contents—AGO—spilling out. We quickly applied AFFF chemical foam compound to suppress the flammability and prevent a potential fire outbreak,” Akinwande said.
He attributed the accident to reckless driving by the truck driver and confirmed that no lives were lost. However, the tanker sustained significant damage. He also noted that the swift intervention of the fire service helped to prevent a major disaster and saved properties worth millions of naira.
