President Bola Tinubu has approved new regulations prohibiting Nigerian military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other activities deemed contrary to the ethics of the armed forces.
The revised guidelines, outlined in Section 26 of the Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, were approved on December 16, 2024. These rules also bar service members from body piercings, tattooing, disorderly conduct, drunkenness on or off duty, and engaging in romantic relationships with subordinates or their spouses.
According to the document, “An officer must not engage in homosexuality, lesbianism, or bestiality. He/she is also prohibited from participating in activities associated with the LGBTQIA2S+ community or cross-dressing.”
Additionally, the regulations emphasize financial and legal accountability, requiring officers to promptly settle obligations such as vehicle licenses and insurance. Issuing dud cheques is categorized as a severe offense.
Other restrictions include a ban on joining secret societies or political parties, misusing government property, engaging in private business ventures, or accepting gifts and favors from subordinates. Actions that could damage the reputation of the armed forces or misuse government resources are also strictly prohibited.
Although the document outlines the prohibited activities, it does not specify the disciplinary actions for violations.
