VIDEO: Tragic incident at OAU as lion kills veterinary technologist

A somber atmosphere enveloped the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, as news spread of the untimely demise of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a beloved Veterinary Technologist. The tragic incident occurred when the experienced caretaker was attacked by a 9-year-old male lion while feeding the animals in the university’s Zoological garden. OAU’s management, staff, and students are mourning the loss of a dedicated and passionate individual who had faithfully looked after the animals for over a decade.

The Incident:
On Monday, February 19, 2024, an unimaginable tragedy unfolded at OAU’s Zoological garden. While performing his routine duties, Olabode Olawuyi was attacked by a lion he had cared for since the cub’s birth nine years earlier. Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues to rescue him, Olawuyi succumbed to the lion’s aggression.

The Reaction:
Upon receiving the devastating news, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, immediately suspended an ongoing meeting and rushed to the scene. Tragically, the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, declared that all attempts to save Olawuyi’s life had failed.

In an effort to prevent any further attacks, the aggressive lion responsible for the tragedy was euthanized. The decision to put down the animal was made with a heavy heart, recognizing that the safety of the staff, students, and visitors to the Zoological garden was paramount.

University Support and Investigation:
The OAU management expressed profound condolences and sympathy to the family of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi. A delegation was dispatched to meet with his grieving widow and children, urging them to find solace in the divine will and strength to navigate through this difficult time.

In response to the tragic incident, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE has ordered a thorough investigation into the immediate and underlying causes of the attack. The aim is to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of both the staff and animals in the Zoological garden.
