The passing of Mallam Bala, whom I fondly call Hadji Bala, on Saturday morning marks the end of an era at the NUJ Millennium Press Centre, Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan.

Known as the man behind the popular and highly patronised NUJ Suya, Bala was more than just a suya vendor, he was a cherished friend, a jovial soul and a symbol of dedication and resilience.

Spending an impressive 38 years as the longest-serving tenant at the NUJ premises, Mallam Bala became an integral part of the community.

His suya spot was not merely a place for grilled meat; it was a meeting point for journalists, leaders, and visitors who sought not just delicious suya but also Bala’s warm smile and lighthearted conversations.

Beyond Ibadan, his influence stretched across the South-West, inspiring the establishment of similar suya spots in Osogbo, Abeokuta, and other cities. His dedication to his craft turned him into a culinary icon, loved by many.

Born in Ibadan to parents who migrated from the North, Mallam Bala seamlessly blended the cultural influences of both regions, creating a legacy that extended beyond his suya stand.

Hadji Bala, as I fondly called him, was not just a vendor; he was my good friend and a great man.

His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will continue to live in our hearts and memories.

May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant his soul Al-Jannat Firdaos. His impact will never be forgotten.
