A student at Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, has tragically died after an incident involving severe punishment from a teacher. The victim, identified as Monday Ariyo, reportedly collapsed during the punishment and later died at a medical facility.

The incident was first highlighted by activist Adetoun, who shared details on Instagram. According to her account, the teacher had introduced a dustbin to the class and instructed students not to break it. Monday Ariyo allegedly made a light-hearted comment, saying the dustbin was purchased with the students’ contributions, which angered the teacher.

Following this exchange, the teacher reported Ariyo’s comment to the principal, who instructed that the student be punished. It has been reported that the teacher enforced the punishment by requiring Ariyo to perform 162 frog jumps and administer 24 strokes with a cane. During the ordeal, Ariyo collapsed and urgent medical assistance was delayed, according to Adetoun.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the details of the incident in a conversation with PUNCH Online. She clarified that the events took place on October 15, 2024, and that Monday was officially pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta. Odutola stated that Ariyo’s body has been taken to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is currently underway.

This incident has sparked outrage among the public, raising questions about disciplinary measures within educational institutions. The school and its administration are likely to face scrutiny as the investigation progresses.
