In a recent statement made by Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemi, also known as Sunday Igboho, he urged fellow Yorubas to defend themselves against herdsmen and bandits who have been encroaching on their farmlands.
However, the Nigerian Army has now reacted, stating that any actions taken by Igboho without the involvement or knowledge of the military or other security agencies would be deemed unconstitutional.
In a viral video, Maj Gen Edward Buba, the spokesperson for the Defence Media Operations, reiterated the army’s stance on Igboho’s statements. The military expressed its willingness to collaborate with Igboho in order to eliminate terrorists from Yoruba land.
Gen Buba emphasized that if Igboho’s intentions were meant to improve the situation, they would be welcomed. However, if his message implied disregarding the Nigerian Army, it would be seen as a direct violation of Nigeria’s constitution.
During a gathering on Monday, Igboho addressed his supporters, urging them not to depend solely on the government for protection and to take action against herders and bandits who were impeding their access to their farmlands in Yoruba land.
