The New Year may signal fresh beginnings, but for some smartphone users, it brings frustration as WhatsApp plans to phase out support for older devices.

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support Android devices running KitKat OS or earlier. While many users can update their operating systems to continue using the app, some older phones are no longer eligible for official updates, leaving users unable to upgrade.

For those still using phones that are over a decade old, this change could mark the end of their WhatsApp experience unless they attempt risky, warranty-voiding DIY updates that could render the device unusable.

Android Models Affected:
The following Android devices will lose support:

Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014

HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601

LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90

Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Later in the year, WhatsApp will also stop supporting certain iPhone models. Beginning May 5, 2025, the app will require iOS 15.1 or later.

iPhone Models Affected:
While some iPhones can be updated to meet the new requirements, others are limited to iOS 12.5.7, making them ineligible. This change will affect the following devices:

iPhone 5s

iPhone 6

iPhone 6 Plus

These changes apply to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, states that the decision is part of regular updates to ensure the app remains secure and functional for newer phones. While the number of users affected is relatively small, the move highlights the challenges of maintaining app compatibility on outdated hardware.

If you’re using one of these older devices, consider upgrading to a newer phone to continue accessing WhatsApp’s services.
