Layla Ali Othman, a successful businesswoman and wife of Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, has responded to the backlash over her husband’s decision to gift their daughter, Aisha, a brand new Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) to celebrate her graduation from secondary school.
The lawmaker’s generous gesture has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many criticizing him for purchasing an expensive car for the teenager amidst Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
However, Layla, who is one of Gagdi’s wives and Aisha’s stepmother, has clarified that the car was not bought with constituency money or any government-allocated funds meant for the people.
“If you want to give information, you should get your facts right,” Layla wrote on social media. “It’s a 2021 model, and yes, it’s equally expensive, and yes, we are proud of our child as she did very well in school.”
Layla further stated that the family can afford the car, and they decided to gift it to Aisha as a reward for her academic achievements. “And yes, we bought her a car because we can afford it. But no, the car wasn’t bought with constituency money or any government allocated funds for the people. If you don’t believe, kindly argue with your ancestors,” she added.
