In Igbo-Ora, Ibarapa Central Local Government Area, Oyo State, a wave of optimism has swept through the quaint community, following a revitalization of the General Hospital, a cornerstone of local healthcare for over six decades. This transformation is largely attributed to the philanthropic efforts of the Adedigba family, who have chosen to honor their late patriarch by giving back to the community.

The General Hospital, founded on February 9, 1963, as part of the Ibarapa Project—a collaborative initiative involving the University of Ibadan, the Western Nigeria Government, and the local community—had long faced challenges. Although it was originally supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and received technical assistance from prestigious institutions like the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, years of neglect had left the hospital’s infrastructure in disrepair and its medical equipment severely outdated.

Recognizing the declining state of the hospital and motivated by the legacy of Alhaji Jimoh Atilola Adedigba, the family undertook an ambitious remodeling project. Just last year, they also constructed and donated a multimillion-naira ultra-modern health center in honor of their patriarch at the Muslim Association of Nigeria Centre on Joyce B Road, Ibadan.

The recent renovations at the General Hospital encompassed extensive rehabilitations of several facilities, including the Female Ward, Theatre Complex, Mortuary Complex, Consulting Rooms, Record Department, and Ante-Natal Hall. In addition, a Solar Panel Street Lighting System was installed to ensure sustainable energy for the hospital.

The impact of these renovations is profound, providing a modern and conducive environment for medical care. The revitalized hospital has seen an increase in healthcare service demand from the community, greatly enhancing its capacity to deliver quality care. The morale among the hospital staff has also significantly improved due to the upgraded facilities.

Last Friday, the community gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the newly renovated hospital. The event was attended by royal fathers, community elders, religious leaders, state and local government officials, and numerous beneficiaries of Alhaji Adedigba’s philanthropy. Thousands turned out to honor the family’s contributions, and the atmosphere was filled with gratitude and joy.

As the community reflects on this significant development, the legacy of the Adedigba family’s healthcare philanthropy is expected to resonate for generations to come, transforming lives and fostering a spirit of giving within the region.

Alhaji Jimoh Atilola Adedigba, born on August 30, 1943, in Oke Iserin quarters of Igbo-Ora, dedicated his life to public service and community development. A distinguished civil servant, he held degrees in Geography and Public Administration, eventually retiring to focus on community initiatives, including the establishment of Nawair-ud-Deen Grammar School in Igbo-Ora, further solidifying his family’s commitment to education and health in the area.
