In a world where access to clean water remains a critical challenge, one Nigerian engineer has emerged as a global leader in water governance and sustainability. Engr. Michael Oludare Ale, a visionary from Ekiti State, has dedicated his career to revolutionizing the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Nigeria and beyond. His extensive contributions to sustainable water resource management have earned him international recognition, including a former seat on the Board of Governors of the World Water Council (WWC) in Paris, France—the highest global policymaking body for water resources.

A Strong Academic Foundation

Engr. Ale’s journey into water resource management began with a solid academic foundation. He holds a B.Sc. in Geology and Mineral Science from the University of Ilorin and a Professional Master’s in Project Development and Implementation from the University of Ibadan. His pursuit of excellence led him to specialized training in UNIDO COMFAR III (Austria, 2010) and an ongoing M.Sc. in Hydro-Engineering Geology at the University of Ibadan, reinforcing his expertise in the field.

Transforming the WASH Sector

As the Founder and CEO of the Global Initiative for Nigeria Development (GIND), Engr. Ale has played a crucial role in reshaping the WASH sector through impactful community projects. His expertise in project auditing, monitoring, and evaluation has led to innovative approaches for improving project sustainability and effectiveness. Notably, he developed the Project Outcome Validation Aggregator (POVA), a framework designed to bridge gaps in project quality and sustainability.

His leadership has been instrumental in implementing WASH projects for organizations like UNICEF and state governments, ensuring adherence to global standards. His initiatives have not only provided clean and safe water to numerous communities but have also improved public health and economic resilience across Nigeria.

Championing Industry Standards

Engr. Ale has been a driving force behind the professionalization of Nigeria’s borehole drilling industry. As the Founding President of the Association of Waterwell Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), he has advocated for best practices and industry regulations, significantly elevating standards. Additionally, as the President of the Association of Project Development Practitioners (APRODEP), he has been at the forefront of refining project development methodologies in Nigeria.

His global influence is evident in his participation in high-profile international conferences, including the World Bank/IFC Annual Meetings, World Water Forums, and UNEP SAICM Meetings, where he has represented Nigeria’s interests and contributed to shaping global water policies.

Contributions to Academia and Research

Engr. Ale’s impact extends to academia and research, where he has authored influential publications on groundwater quality, urban flood control, and WASH infrastructure evaluation. His research has informed policy decisions and improved water management strategies across the country. Additionally, he has conducted extensive water point audits and infrastructure assessments for national and state-level projects, providing crucial data-driven insights for sustainable solutions.

Beyond his professional achievements, Engr. Ale is committed to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. Through his Male Knowledge Academy, he mentors young professionals, providing them with leadership training and industry expertise. His passion for nurturing young minds ensures a future of sustainable development driven by well-equipped leaders.

For his outstanding contributions, Engr. Ale has received numerous accolades, including the Award Fellow for Innovation and Technology at the TED Global Conference in Tanzania. His professional affiliations further attest to his influence, as he holds executive positions in APRODEP and AWDROP and is a member of the Nigeria Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS), Nigeria Association of Hydro-Geologists (NAH), and Nigeria Association of Evaluators (NAE).
