The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Professor Ruth Haruna Wazis, former Head of the Department of Business Management at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Professor Wazis’ home. According to Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Yusuf Lawal, the professor had parked her car in the garage when a mechanical malfunction caused the vehicle to suddenly accelerate, knocking her down and running her over.

“It was a freak accident that took the life of Professor Wazis,” CP Lawal told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “She unfortunately succumbed to her injuries before being transported to the hospital.”

The police commissioner added that the professor’s remains were taken to the hospital by members of her family.

Professor Wazis was a highly respected academic and leader within the UNIMAID community. Her untimely passing has left her colleagues, students, and the broader academic fraternity in Borno State deeply saddened.

The university has not yet released an official statement on the tragic incident, but sources indicate that grief counseling and support services are being provided to those affected by this devastating loss.
